Romantic love has always been communicated with a gift of flowers. Blooms convey feelings quite effectively. Flowers are often admired for their freshness, their color, and their intrinsic beauty. There are different meanings regarding colors and kind of flower chosen as gifts. Examples of these hidden messages in flowers are sympathy and regret, love and companionship.

Buying any kind of flowers has become more convenient than ever, with the proliferation of florist shops, whether physical or online. Online flower shops particularly have a wide range of blooms for sale as gifts for all occasions. They also have closely related products for gift giving. Hence, customers turn to floral shops when they need special gifts. Flower shops provide clients with a range of flowers and other gift ideas to choose from.

Shopping for a perfect baby shower gift is easy in a florist shop. Choose a baby hamper and a bouquet to go with it. A personally arranged floral centerpiece will prove useful when decorating a themed baby shower itself. Make gifts for Christmas or any occasion even more special with the addition of flowers. When giving a card, have it delivered with a flower or a bouquet to make it more meaningful.

Favorite Gifts That You Should Try

Peeking at an online shop will show us a catalogue of blooms: lilies, sunflowers, carnations, and roses. There are also peonies, irises, and hydrangeas. These various flowers are available in bouquets, in baskets or in vases. These lovely blooms are usually seen during weddings and festivals. They serve as room dcor and as accessories. Wristlets and corsages are also made of flowers.

Hampers are also common products that online florist stores offer. A hamper is a wicker basket full of things put together for a gift set. There are baby hampers, wine and food hampers, a balloon and chocolate hampers, fruit baskets, and other gift hampers. Other popular items that go perfectly well with flowers are soft toys like teddy bears. Aside from fresh flowers, there is also the choice of plants in pots. There is the bonsai, the table garden, and for permanent floral displays there is the choice of artificial flower arrangements.

Online florist shops are the answer to the problem of couples who are miles away from each other. These internet-based florists provide means for men to bathe their women with bouquets of beautiful, fresh blossoms even when they’re halfway across the globe.

However, these internet-based shops are not only for couples on discrete nations. Even someone like you who lives a couple of blocks from a florist can benefit from an online flower shop.

If you are a busy guy or someone who simply values his time, this service fits you. Just imagine not having to go from one florist to another and still finding the vibrant blooms fit for your queen right on your laptop monitor. Just imagine that you can leave your order without lining up or waiting very long.

Buying a bouquet of vibrant blossoms over the web is time-saving as well. In just minutes, you can be done! Additionally, it’s a truly convenient way. You can leave your order anytime, anywhere. You don’t have to be troubled about business hours or physically visiting the store. Just visit the internet flower shop’s site, browse through collections, and place your order while sitting comfortably on your couch.

Aside from the comfort it provides, a web-based flower shop also offers incredibly reasonable rates. With the lack of leasing fee and other costs connected to retaining a regular store, a web-based shop cuts down on its overheads. As a result, it can afford to price its flowers cheaper than its competitors.

Numerous varieties of flowers are sold by the internet-based flower shop, just like the local store. There are the typical favorites like roses, carnations, and tulips. Some shops even sell some uncommon kinds because they have direct access to flower farms all over the globe. With fewer middlemen and time concerned in the deal, web flower shops can present the freshest and loveliest blossoms.

There are web florists that deliver internationally so you can send flowers to your loved ones all over the world too. However, if your recipient lives in the same area, you can just buy from online flower shops that deliver in the area.

Buying flowers over the internet is not only for lovers who are physically apart. It’s for everyone who desires to send affordable and fresh blossoms the quick and easy way.

When shopping for roses, you may notice that there are two different types to choose from. You will likely encounter “own root” roses and “grafted” roses. So what is the difference and which one is right for you?

Grafted roses are actually made up of two plants. It will have the stems and flowers of one plant and the root system of another. Horticulturists will typically create these hybrids to take advantage of a strong, weather tough root system of one plant and the beauty and delicateness of another.

You will usually be able to tell whether you have a grafted rose by looking for a bulge or knob low down on the stem of the plant. This is the location where the two type of plants were grafted together.

While the hardiness of the plant may be increased, there is the risk that suckers of the original plant will emerge during the growing process. Also, it is possible that harsh winter or other unfavorable condition will kill the top part of the plant, leaving you with only the underlying root structure of a different plant.

An “own root” rose, on the other hand, is all original. It is not combined with another plant. It is started as a cutting and will have its own root structure. The sellers of “own root” roses will typically brag on the label that the plant is “own root” and you will also not see any signs of grafting like you would on a grafted rose.

Should an own root rose suffer through a harsh winter, as long as the root system is not damaged, it will re-sprout as it’s original self, and not some mystery plant. You will also not suffer or experience suckers of a foreign looking plant.

You do lose the benefit of the hardy root structure with own root roses. This may lead to them being less hardy and possibly more susceptible to diseases.

So, which should you choose, grafted or own root roses? This mainly depends upon the conditions that the plants are going to be growing in.

If the environment is not likely to benefit from enhanced strength and disease fighting powers of a mysterious root system, then own root roses will likely be ideal. If, however, you are in an area where you will need the benefits of an enhanced root structure you’re likely going to find the grafted rose more suitable for your needs.

Let's Face It

by Steven Karback

Let’s Face It

We may as well face it, almost a century has passed since we dipped into Rosa X odorata (tea) blood and the modern rose passed into a new phase. The genes have been wound so many different ways from an ever increasing number of species roses. (Should you call me a hybrid Irishman” just because a remote ancestor named Dennis” came to America some 200 years ago, and his offspring intermarried into French, English, German and Welsh families?)

Where do the modern large flowered bush garden roses get their robust stems? Not from tea! Where do the sturdy big flowers come from? Not from tea! From whence do they get some cold resistance? Not from tea!

If we must single out some ancestor common observation would move us to use the name “hybrid gallica.” But this leaves us with the current problems. For in addition to gallica the modern roses have a fair representation of seven other major species roses in their genetic makeup.

It’s Gone- Let It Die In Peace

Actually the name hybrid tea well served its purpose some 150 years ago when it told the world that a new species was being dipped into and new emphasis was to be placed on “ever-blooming.” (Due credit for everblooming should be accorded Rosa chinensis – all too often we give it all to Rosa X odorata, the tea rose.)

Some of us now want to dip into Rosaecae to secure really good sunfast hardy yellow roses. If we are successful in this shall we immediately begin to call our roses “hybridecae”?

For goodness sake, I hope not! I feel sorry for the families which set a plate at the table for the dead family member. We should honor the dead but the dead ought not to dictate to the living, for the dead change not and life is a constant change.

Turning to my visitor I said, “l would just call it a large-flowered everblooming rose.” He perfectly understood these words. So d0 I. Do you?

Other Problems Arising

I have seen a few roses grown singly on two or two and a half foot stems which would rival any hybrid tea for form and beauty. Yet these may not enter in rose competition for the really top awards, for those awards are granted only to hybrid tea classification!

Thus by a “name” we rule certain roses out of top competition. Why should we single out this or that great knockout rose and say, no, it may not compete for we choose to call certain other roses hybrid tea although like the old hybrid ‘Peace’ they get their color from Rosa foetida, their stem from R. gallica, their plant from gallica chinensis tea?

You may object, “Well why worry, these are only exceptional cases.” Let me point out that as you begin to enter the desert, water holes may still be plentiful but this does not mean it is safe to ignore providing for conditions that are immediately ahead and are even now causing difficulty.

What roses and plants covering the landscape will be sold six years from today? The plants are now in nursery seedling flats today. Check them, brother, check them.

They are getting better and better and we have bred almost all the tea right out of them to make room for better genes. Sure, we will hang on to the wide color range of tea and it will reinforce the repeat blooming and perhaps help with health but from hereon in tea is only another brick in the new rose building.

To be very candid, let us all admit that the only current value of the name hybrid tea is that somehow the public associates a “monthly” rose with the name hybrid tea.

by Tracy Anderson

Want to have a good night’s sleep? Smell some roses in your garden and you’ll get rosier dreams.

This rosy connection was discovered by researchers from the University Hospital Mannheim in Germany who said that what you smell may influence your dreams.

Their new research was presented at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Foundation in Chicago. It is the first study that shows the impact of olfactory function on dreams.

“If odor has a strong effect on your emotions when you’re awake, it makes sense for it to have a strong effect on your emotions when you’re asleep,” said study author Boris Stuck.

To prove this, they recruited 15 healthy young women in their 20s – the period when the sense of smell is strongest.

The volunteers were fitted with olfactometers. Tubes leading to their nostrils constantly pumped air as the subjects slept.

“The subjects’ brain activity was also being monitored. When they reached the rapid-eye-movement stage of sleep, when most dreams occur, a shot of scent was administered via the olfactometer for ten seconds,” reported Rebecca Carroll of National Geographic News.

Two kinds of scents were administered – that of roses and rotten eggs. After a minute, the subjects were awakened and asked to describe their dreams.

“Each subject was interviewed three times: once after a rose-infused dream, once after smelling the sulfuric scent of rotten eggs, and once after no odor was administered,” Carroll said.

“The results showed that smelling roses gave nearly all dreams a pleasant tint, whereas the rotten eggs colored dreams negatively,” she added.

The novel study was praised for establishing the link between smell and the sleep centers of the brain. So sleep tight tonight after smelling the roses.
