It is easy for anyone to enhance the look of their lawn. Lawn chemicals are easily available anywhere to treat lawn pests and ensure green lawns, but have you considered the risks these products present to you, your family, pets, and the environment. Waste material from chemical lawn treatments are absorbed into underground streams, or run-off into nearby streams and water sources polluting the drinking water. Chemical lawn materials may also harm various components of your local ecosystem causing irreversible problems. You can avoid these problems associated with chemical lawn care by switching to organic lawn care.

Soil varies from place to place and it is important to know the acidity or alkalinity of your soil in order to treat it effectively. Acidity and alkalinity are measured by pH. You can test your soil to find out the pH level. Then you will know whether it is more heavily alkaline (pH above 7.0) or acidic (pH below 6.5). Knowing this information will help you choose the right organic treatment for your soil.

The biggest problem with organic fertilizer is offensive smell. Many people are so turned off by the smell of organic fertilizer that they refuse to use it. You need to know that organic fertilizers can now be bought in granular form. Granular organic fertilizer is made of treated sewage. It complies with all safety regulations and provides your soil with much needed nutrients. The best thing is that this organic fertilizer is odorless, providing lawn treatment without harmful side effects.

There are a number of good organic fertilizers from which to choose. One of the best is Coconut Fiber. It is great for use with plants in acidic soil, with a pH of 5.5 – 6.3. Coconut Fiber, like other organic fertilizers should be easy to find in your local gardening store. Another good organic fertilizer is earthworm fertilizer. Earthworms themselves can be used to enrich the soil, as well. Use only small layers of fertilizer for in order to grow healthy, green plants and lawn.

The use of organic pesticides is much better for your lawn and the environment than chemical pesticides. Organic pesticides include diatomic earth, specialized lawn care sand, oatmeal, vinegar, and cinnamon. These can be used to help control pests without harming the environment.

Switching to organic lawn and garden care will benefit your health and the environment. It will also return you to the methods of gardening used by your grandparents that produced such great results just a few years ago. They produced beautiful lawns and gardens without the use of chemical treatments and pesticides.

by Phineas Duru

When it comes to lights in our future, solar lights are the way to go. Humans have been using the light from the sun for years, but it has only been in the past few years that we can harness and use the power from the sun. Using solar lights is another step towards become more eco friendly.

Not only are solar lights able to be used in many ways, but they are earth friendly too. The sun is a source of energy that is renewable and we can use the energy from it without causing more pollution to occur. Using solar lights allows us to light up our world without having to increase negative effects on the earth.

It’s a good idea to take a look at how solar lights actually work. The light fixtures actually have a little solar power on top of them. They are a lot like the panels you see on roofs for homes, but much smaller. During the time that the sun is out, the panel collects energy from the sun, which is transferred to a battery that can be recharged again and again. When the sun is out, the battery charges up, and then when it gets dark, that energy is taken and used on the LED light, which provides light through the dark hours.

Today solar lights are used primarily to brighten the outside in our gardens, the backyard, around the pool, and the path to the front door or garage. With this in mind, solar lighting fixtures are available in a vast assortment ranging from functional to decorative. Solar lights can be found to attach up high on a building or to hang from a post or tree shining down to light a wider area. There are many lantern designs to choose from for use closer to the ground rendering a walkway safer to navigate. Would lights on your pool, pond or moat be pleasing? Youll find a floating variety offered as well.

Installation of solar lights is quite easy. There are no trenches to dig for the lights and no complicated wiring to deal with either. It’s very simple to press these lights into the ground or to hang them up somewhere. These lights are independent from each other, and only need to be placed in an area where they get plenty of sunlight.

LEDs are much longer lasting than regular light bulbs and use very little power to keep going. More often than not the LED will last as long as the solar light fixture itself, years. Because LEDs are dimmer than regular bulbs, fixtures are manufactured using reflective surfaces and are available with numerous LED to increase brightness.

Solar lights are going to vary in costs. Some home improvement stores offer great prices, while a boutique with garden enhancing lights may charge a bit more for the lights. No matter what you pay for them, you won’t have to keep paying for electricity to use the lights, since sun light doesn’t cost a thing. If you replace other lighting fixtures that use electricity with these solar lights, you will probably notice that you save some money on your electric bill.

The advantages of solar lights are many. Even short, gray, winter days hold enough sunlight to fully charge the battery. As long as the sun continues to rise and set the lights will turn on and off automatically. The LED produces no heat ensuring safety around children and pets. During a power outage you may sit outside and read a book or play cards with your neighbors. Solar lights are clearly a benefit to our planet and its the neighborly thing to do!

Backyard activities to most of us means sports-centered activities such as horseshoes or flying a kite. We can broaden the scope of backyard activities to include completing projects. For instance, when the home improvement lover hears backyard activities, chances are they start working on projects in their head that they can do outdoors. For many, the biggest project in the backyard would be to build or remodel a backyard structure.

Buildings or structures like swimming pools, storage sheds, barns, and garages are found in many U.S. backyards. There is probably one in yours. With summer around the corner, you should consider any remodeling or rebuilding of these structures now. You may have outgrown the structure or it may simply need a few minor updates.

You may not have a structure to remodel, but would love to build a new shed, barn or garage. Summer weather in the U.S. provides prime conditions to begin construction on one of these backyard projects.

To start building your backyard structure you will need a well thought out plan. A well thought out plan not only shows exactly what you are building, but how you are going to build it. If your plan doesn’t have all of these details, you will want to conduct some more research. When you have all the details, you can then begin building your backyard structure.

You can start researching how to build your shed, barn, or garage at a library or bookstore. Both places will carry a number of books that can help you gather ideas and designs, and also instructions on how to build it. Anything you find at the library can only be checked out for a short time period. If you are wanting to keep these books for reference on mulitple projects, you should invest in buying them at the bookstore.

With your structural design in place, you then will need a list of building supplies to obtain. Various projects will need different supplies. But many supplies will be utlitized on all projects, including wood, saws, nails and certain tools. You can be sure to use these supplies on all backyard buildings or remodeling projects.

Summer is an ideal time to being construction on backyard projects as we’ve said. The weather is usually clear, however, you should still pay attention to any rain in the forecast. You will not want to be roofing or painting in the rain. And as these steps can take longer than just one day, you need to be sure the forecast is clear for several days ahead. Otherwise, you may be interrupted and won’t be able to resume building or remodeling until days in the future.

Building and remodeling projects do make great backyard activities, but they may not be for everyone. Someone with no construction experience may feel overwhelmed and that they simply cannot do the project alone. Turning to a professional for help may be the best solution. While doing the work yourself can save you thousands, it can also cost you if you do not know how to do it. Future repairs and safety issues will cost more on a poorly done building or remodeling project.

Do not take harmful chances with a building or remodeling project. You will still be outside taking pleasure in your backyard if you are performing the home improvement alone or are supervising a professional company do it.

Choosing to put in sod has a number of advantages over seeding which is why many people prefer it. A green lawn is easily achievable with sod with little waiting time as you don’t have to wait for the grass to grow in. It also addresses erosion and controls it right away. Using sod instead of planting grass seeds also eliminates dust and mud so it is almost as good as done once you plant it.

Another good trait is that it can be planted all year round so there would be no problems whichever season a homeowner might want to attend to landscape their front yard or backyard. The best reason to choose it over seeding is that it can be used for total installation or smaller pieces can be bought to repair smaller areas.

The first consideration is of course the type of sod to use. Choosing the variety of sod should not only be based on its appearance but the maintenance it needs to thrive should also be considered by the homeowner. There are certain types of sod that do well with shade while others do better with frequent sun exposure. This means that the layout of the house should also be considered to make sure the sod that is chosen will survive.

You must also consider the consider the climate before selecting the type of sod to be used. Not all varieties will do well in cold climates, hot climates, or places where it is rainy all the time. There are also sods that can withstand high traffic areas better than others so if a lot of activities for the future lawn is in mind, it is best to consider those.

Kentucky Bluegrass is great for northern climates but you need to make sure it is watered regularly as it needs more water than warm season grass. Tall Fescue, on the other hand, can do well with much less water and although it is expected to flourish in moist areas, it will be able to adapt to different kinds of soil and it is preferred for high traffic areas. Bermuda grass is one that is high maintenance because it does poorly in shade and is best for southern climates.

Zoysia is also best for southern climates. This type of sod prefers clay and sandy soil and it grows quite well under the sun. The advantage of using Zoysia is that it also satisfactorily performs in shade and is naturally-resistant to weeds. There are also people who like to blend different varieties of sod to improve the adaptability. Sod can either be planted or ordered but it is a good to start to know which type would be best suited to the homeowners space and landscaping plans.

Artificial plants

If you have not seen artificial plants in a few years, you might be surprised by how much they have changed for the better. Back in the day, your average artificial plant was not likely to be a very convincing decoration. Generally, they were molded out of plastic with visible seams. The texture and the look were all slightly wrong. To a very casual glance, most of them would look more or less like the real thing, but to someone who knew what they were looking for, it was obvious that the artificial tree or shrub you were looking at was a clear forgery.

Nowadays, however, artificial silk plants have changed this all. I have been a gardener for about 15 years, and sometimes I can’t tell if I am looking at an artificial plants or a real one! I don’t really know how they do it, but I have started to appreciate them much more. I didn’t like the fake look that artificial plants used to have, but now that they are more realistic, I understand the appeal.

After all, not everyone has the time or the patience to take care of growing things. If you have time, you should think about it. It can be a rewarding experience, after all. If, however, you don’t really have the time or patience, consider artificial plants. There is something primal about the way greenery affects us. Looking at a flower, a tree, or a shrub every day can really lighten up the mood in an office.

One of the great things about artificial plants is that they come in so many different varieties. You can get artificial shrubs, trees, bushes, and exotic plants from a wide variety of different species. I have even seen companies that offer extremely stylized artificial plants not meant to mimic any living species. Instead, they let their artists imaginations run wild and sell you the results. Some of them are quite striking and stunning, and rather believable as well.

I think that what makes many artificial plants so believable today is the ability of modern manufacturers to give them the asymmetrical look that real growing things have. When fake flowers used to look completely symmetrical, it was easy to tell that they were made out of plastic. Real things do not look perfect. Real things look unique. Nowadays, as imitations get more clever, the people who make them are beginning to understand this.
