Trade out older light bulbs for ones that are more energy efficient.

Take some safety steps before you go into a home improvement project. Follow these safety rules to avoid injuring yourself or damaging your home. Make sure that you have read all instructions and tutorials before you start any renovation project.

Use affordable motion detection lights in important spots around the house. By turning on the lights only when needed, these will save keep your electricity costs down. You can take your home’s safety up a notch by installing motion detectors that cause lights to turn on when a thief is present.

Motion detector lights are a good option to consider if you are planning to install exterior lights on your property. These lights add security to your home and are only slightly more expensive than the exterior lighting without motion sensing. This also means your electric bills will be lower.

If the contractor mentions any problems or issues, homeowners should have the information validated before investing any more money in the project or modifying the construction schedule.

Everytime you look at a house with a big lawn, the garden would always be the first thing that you would notice. Even if the house looks great but the garden looks awful, your home would not still be considered beautiful. You see, the garden is the accent of your house. The inside of the house cannot be seen by an outsider whenever he passes, but he can surely see the garden.

The impression of the house relies mainly on how beautiful your garden is. Of course, if the outside part of the house looks pretty, the inside will even look lovelier. Since the garden plays a major role in creating an impression of house in the minds of other people, the garden should be artily meticulously ornamented, designed and accented.

The lawn should be lush with green grass and carefully arranged plants. A water fountain will create n image of overflowing blessings. Covered walkways directly leading to the steps of the house or the main door can be built to create direction. The plants are to be arranged according to their sunlight needs. Some plants require being placed under direct sunlight in order to be healthy. Some plants prefer to be in the shade because too much sun makes their leaves wilt.

Arranging plants in groups make them more noticeable. Place plants in groups where neither of their leaves are of the same color. This makes each of the plants stand out, even if they are smaller. Plants that look soothing are good to have. Commonly used in a zen are bamboos, palms, and banana plants.

A covered walkway is the part of the garden which should also be given much attention. Tiles or stone materials should be laid out in a pattern to form the walkway. Some people prefer to use synthetic stones over genuine stones because of the big price difference. You have to remember that walkways are placed under the mercy of sunlight, rain and snow. It is important that they stay durable. Colored stones arranged in a beautiful pattern will make the house look charming. Settle on a pattern which does not look too complicated. It is always nice to choose one which is soothing to the eyes.

Planning a garden makeover? Build a covered walkway leading to the front porch or main door to add a sense of direction.Click here for more information on covered walkways

There was a time when the choice and difference in outdoor carpeting was really limited, and all that was available was synthetic grass style. But times change, and nowadays the choice in quality, color and style for outdoor carpets is truly staggering.

Not only do the materials and manufacturing techniques differ a lot from one carpet to the next, there are also options depending on the location of the carpet installation, whether it is meant for a patio, for a poolside, and so on.

In all cases, the main thing that you will have to consider, regardless of the outdoor carpet style that you will ultimately choose, is the amount of humidity that the outdoor carpet will be subject to. This will have a strong effect on needed quality and price.

The typical outdoor carpet from previous decades, artificial grass style, is still very much in vogue and makes up one of the two big families of outdoor carpeting. While there are not a wide number of colors and other options to choose from, the basic version isn’t any different from the stuff used to pave sports stadiums in the seventies.

The simplest version of this kind of carpet that you will find is the Astroturf-like grassy material, well-known from stadiums and such. The basic artificial grass types are a little threadbare, and only good for areas that are not subject to heavy use.

On the other hand, thicker and better quality grass style outdoor carpet can be laid down almost anywhere, and is also much more resistant to heavy traffic. Generally speaking, it is a better and more long-lived option.

The other big family of outdoor carpets is based on imitating indoor styles, but adding waterproofing. The materials are mostly synthetic, but plant-based or woolen outdoor carpets also exist. Most have a water-repellent backing and are treated to be highly mold-resistant.

You can judge this kind of outdoor carpeting according to similar criteria than for indoor carpets, e.g. look at the number4 of knots, the fibers, and so on. Plus, don’t forget to consider their waterproofness.

Always check the backing of the carpet, as this is the main element that blocks moisture from seeping up the ground and that ensures that the outdoor carpet will have a long life.

Look at the offers of more than one seller and don’t skim on a bit of money going for the cheaper option as it will last much less and leave you with the need to replace that outdoor carpet.

Gardens may not appeal to us Americans, in the same way that they do to those from the United Kingdom or to people who live in other European cities. Nevertheless, we Americans do know how to tend to our gardens.

Gardens may not appeal to us Americans, in the same way that they do to those from the United Kingdom or to people who live in other European cities. Nevertheless, we Americans do know how to tend to our gardens.

Afternoon tea socials don’t play a big part in our social calendars; we prefer to have our gatherings out on our front lawns for that weekly barbecue social and the odd other. This stated, there’s still the fact that we do know how to make our gardens, beautiful. Yes, we certainly know how to create beauty.

Now, for those of us who don’t own gardens which are as big as our houses and aren’t quite as big or large enough to boast about; they remain parts of our houses just the same. It won’t hurt us to add some garden decor here and there now, would it? It sure wouldn’t hurt and there are many enjoyable ways to do that.

For those gardens which begin in front the house and end where the lawn starts, why don’t you start with a special arrangement of thin stones with designs painted on their smooth surfaces? You can paint a whole bunch of things on these stones though this idea is freely given for you to use.

Take a flat stone, it could be white or black, and start painting the end parts of a bumblebee’s stripes. Continue with this pattern until you’ve finished with a set that will look like a bee when the stones are put together. When you’re done, put them in your garden in half circles like a necklace, from right to left.

You can have as many arrangements of bumblebee designed garden decor stones as you like. These painted stones should be used to improve a garden, not a lawn or yard! You’ll need either acrylic or spray paint for this project. You have to apply varnish on top of the stones, when you’re through. This way, they don’t get ruined by rain.

Your stone decor arrangement can be patterned from this design or you can choose one from the seemingly endless list of choices out there. You can choose a pattern of flowers, or marble colored swirls, curvy waves or even polka dots.

Here’s another suggestion. If you’d like your garden decor stones to be extraordinary stand outs, then turn them into conversational pieces. Go to a shop that does photo transfers. Ask their technical staff to transfer prints of your favorite paintings by famous artists, from their computers to your flat stones. Don’t like paintings? You can choose your favorites from your picture albums and have these transferred, or pictures of famous personalities; anything that you’d like just as long as it follows a theme of your choice. You can even go without a specific theme.

While ordering photo transfers for your garden decor stone aren’t that expensive, they’re not cheap, either. If you’re willing to part with the extra cash for decorations that are really eye-catching, then go ahead. Spend, spend, spend, and keep your neighbors talking about your trendy garden.

Ready to upgrade your garden decorations, remember that there are lots of choices when it comes tometal yard art.

The paper lantern assembly procedure is not tiresome work. A decorative paper lantern that needs assembly can be put together in 20 minutes.

Also, an expanding metal tool is supplied with hanging paper lanterns. The cord used to nag the lantern must be purchased separately. Generally, the length of a cord is about 10 to 15 feet and if you need more than that, an extension cord is the solution.

Even though assembly is not difficult, be careful not to contact the sides of the lantern with the expander tool when widening the lamp. Additionally, collapsible wires are used to make the body of these lamps. This helps packaging and mailing lanterns so they can be kept flattened easily. To obtain the original shape of the lantern, the metal expander is needed.

After you reshape the lantern, you will need the cord to hang it. Place the cord along the wall to the top and hook the cord to the ceiling. Select a tape that will stick the cord well. The cord can be fixed with hooks which are stronger than any tape. Install the light next. As electric fixtures may cause fires, keep enough space between each side of the lanterns when positioning the bulb. It is more suitable to use CFL bulbs rather than other types because these bulbs heat up less.

CFL bulbs are much better than incandescent lights for paper lanterns as the former heats less. Always keep the wattage low as it minimizes the probability of fires. After attaching, switch on the light to see if it works properly. Occasionally, it may not work due to erroneous installation. Check the installation for proper usage.

Whilst having a great garden is important you should consider ways of allowing the beauty of your garden to shine through in different types of weather situations. Some people also like to have the opportunity of having their garden lit up in the night. For these people, looking at different landscape lighting options will allow you the chance of having your garden looking just the way you want it, no matter what the natural lighting conditions are.

In order to provide the best landscape lighting conditions, you will be able to choose from a wide variety of lighting fixtures. These fittings can be in the form of lamps, lanterns, spotlights, halogen lights and even solar-powered lights. The price of these lighting fixtures varies for each style of light.

If you are planning on using landscape lighting you will have to choose where to place the lighting in order to get the best lighting effects. You may also want to consider which lights will provide your garden with a bright lighting. You can look in landscaping magazines to obtain an idea of the various ways that landscape lighting fittings can be used.

While it is possible to get ideas for placing landscape lighting in your garden from landscape magazines there is another way too. For this method, you have to look at your garden in the daytime and in the night time. In the morning you will need to look what spots in your garden would be improved by the use of landscape lighting. When night falls look out at your garden again and see what areas would benefit from the use of lighting.

Then, the morning after this nocturnal inspection, you should go out into the garden and mark out roughly where you think there is a need for lighting. Once you have looked at this area properly, try imagining what type of lights would be of use. You can then go to the garden store to look for these lights, once you have decided on the kind of landscape lighting.

Then, after you have found your perfect lights and you have read the instructions on setting them up you will have to commence setting up the landscape lighting in a way that will make the maximum out of your garden. You ought to try subtle and strong lighting to decide on the best for your garden. Coloured lighting is a good option too. You could use a dimmer to trial stronger and subtle lighting.

Once you have finished your tests and have installed your final lighting, you will see what a difference having the right landscape lighting can make to your garden. From now on, when night falls, you will see the beauty of your garden in a different light.

One thing that every patio can’t be complete without is a patio umbrella. This lovely piece of furniture provides amicable shade so that you can relax and enjoy sunny, warm, summer days. Before you settle on a final decision for your patio umbrella, there are a few things you need to consider.

Choosing a proper shaft material for the patio umbrella is a crucial step in determining which model will suit your needs best. This doesn’t just determine how the umbrella will look, it determines how it will function, as well. Aluminum and wood are your two main choices in this case.

Although they can be more expensive, wooden patio umbrellas are often chosen based on their look and feel. Wood is a great choice especially if you want to match other wooden furniture pieces. The choice of wood will factor in on the price of the umbrella heavily.

The downside to a wooden umbrella is that it doesn’t match the high strength and durability of more modern materials like aluminum. Some designs have gone around this by replacing the inside of the wood with a steel core for added mechanical strength. With this you get the look of wood with the strength of steel.

The most popular kind of patio umbrella has recently been the aluminum variety because of their lightweight nature and high mechanical strength. Aluminum tends to cost a whole lot less than wood, too, which is another plus. You can even customize the look with different finishes.

If you live in an area plagued by heavy winds and gusty conditions, then aluminum umbrellas are perfect. Their high durability will help them last through conditions that wooden umbrellas just can’t handle. Aluminum is a great modern choice for its strength and endurance.

Choosing between aluminum or wood for your patio umbrella can come down to function versus aesthetic. For this decision you’ll need to determine what’s most important to your specific needs. It’s definitely recommended to favor practicality first since you want the umbrella to function well no matter how it looks.

By taking the time to look into all of your options you’ll have the best chance possible to find the patio umbrella that’s perfect for your specific tastes and needs. Whether wood or aluminum, the right patio umbrella is out there if you’re willing to take the time required to find it.

by Sheri Terry

Cushions make good patio accents aside from providing additional comfort and support for homeowners. Among the many types of patio cushions are chair pads, floor cushions, and pet beds.

Chair pads are being used to make hard seat surfaces more relaxing and softer to sit on. However, this primitive purpose had already evolved to more advanced usage to satisfy various consumer needs. Among those needs are cost, style, and medical conditions. Some pads can be constructed differently to meet financial capacity of more consumers. Designs like flower patterns and plaids are also available for varying themes in each home. Size is another consideration for chair pads. It must fit to various seating capacity ranging from single use to family use.

For consumers with small patios and avoids high cost and bulky patio furniture, patio cushions and furniture can be merged into one by having floor cushions. This cushion is now gaining popularity especially for younger consumers because it is cheaper, smaller, and easier to rearrange. Floor cushions like bean bags often have striking colors and firm construction giving it a sense of freshness and comfort as well.

Pet beds are obviously intended for household pets. It offers the same comfortable cushion for pets because most pet beds were made from the same material and constructed in a way that it will benefit the pets.

Aside from cushion type, another important aspect of patio cushions is its filling. Various filling provide different effects and levels of comfort.

First is the conventional foam. It is commonly used in couches, mattresses, and other home applications. It is available in varying shapes from rectangular foams to T-shaped foam blocks and its edge can be rounded depending on its application area. Custom shapes are also available for window seats and other applications like boat mattress filling.

Next filling is the outdoor foam. This foam is highly recommended for outdoor applications because of its large foam cells. Large cells allow water to penetrate to the other side of the foam with less degrading effect on the performance of the cushion. In addition, outdoor foam dries faster compared with conventional foams because of its larger cells.

Patio cushions also use sophisticated fillings like memory foams and polyurethane. Such materials offer added comfort and support to users because it can follow the contour of the body. Examples of cushions with this filling are foam sacks, bolsters, and leg pads. Foam sack is very similar with bean bag but it is filled with polyurethane foam instead of bean-like material. Bolsters are often used as fillers and is great for leg and back support while leg pads are used to lessen pain and pressure in the lower body.

Commonly known simply as The Black Spot, the small circular black spots with fringed edges cause leaves to yellow, and being that they are signs of a disease. Leaving the affected leaves on the plant can allow the disease to spread, so you should remove the infected foliage and pick up any fallen leaves around the rose. Artificial sprays may be used to prevent or treat it.

If you notice that the leaves on your rose plants start to curl and turn purple, you should check the leaves and canes for a white powder, as these may be signs of a fungal infection known as powdery mildew. Spread by the wind, it may cause the canes to become stunted or malformed. Treat using Funginex or Benomyl.

Known as rust, this disease is characterized by orange-red blisters that turn black in fall. It can survive the winter and will then attack new sprouts in the spring. Collect and discard leaves that are infected in fall. A Benomyl or Funginex spray every 7-10 days may help.

If you notice that the leaves and flowers on the plant are stunted or malformed, then chances are there are spider mites on the plant. They are tiny yellow, red or green spiders found on the underside of leaves where they suck juices. The application of Orthene or Isotox may help in treating this infestation.

If you see small red, green, or brown bugs under your plants, you have an infestation of aphids. Tell-tale signs of an infestation are mottled leaves and small white webs underneath the leaves. Oft-times the bugs will be found clustered under leaves or near the tender buds, where they will suck the juices. You can use Diazinon or Malathion to clear the infestation.

If your flowers appear deformed when they open, or if they don’t open at all, you could have Thrips at the source of the problem. The slender brown-yellow bugs with fringed wings can also be found sucking away at the juices of the leaves. Use Malathion and Orthene to treat.

Just about everyone wants a swimming pool in their backyard. If you’re rich enough you can probably afford a house big enough to have a room with a pool. When the days get hot, so do the nights. So you need good lighting for your pool so you can swim at night and also to keep the area secure.

You can light up your pool and make it not only safer but more romantic and exciting. Pools are great for producing special lighting effects using the water to reflect the light. You can produce a stunning effect using the right lighting.

Safety is always a big concern for pool owners but many people don’t want to ruin the romance of a pool by completely shining out the area around it. Underwater lighting is a spectacular option that gives you safety and function. While another option could be to have a variety of lights that offer different effects or colors.

Pool lighting tends to set the atmosphere of your whole pool and the options available for different types of pools, as well as moods, is exhausting to say the least. It all comes down to your needs and sense of individuality.

Landscaping, like rock sculptures and exotic plants, can benefit from flattened lights. This is a way to make your swimming pool area an entertainment hub. It will not only make your pool area safer, but also produce quite stunning effects. Jacuzzis or Spas also benefit from this type of lighting- Even separate pools for children.

There are many choices available to you when it comes to swimming pool lighting. This whole area of lighting has gone through many improvements and changes in a few short years. There are many types of lighting for you to choose from. Traditional incandescent and quartz halogen lights spread a white light and are very good for safety purposes. They can spread a good illumination over the whole area. Plastic color lenses can make a great underwater lighting effect.

Lights that change color are extremely popular and produce great results in your swimming pool area. With LED lights you can get up to 50,000 hours of illumination and millions of different colors to choose from.

The pool area of your home is just plain fun and exciting for your guests, and by paying close attention to the difference that lighting can make, you are sure to provide a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for entertaining. Just take that first step.
