Selecting Your Greenhouse Windows

by Bill Rowe

The windows you choose for your greenhouse will go a long way to determining if you have a successful greenhouse or not. Greenhouse windows contribute heavily to the energy management of your greenhouse. If you were to select the wrong material or use a window that is poorly constructed, then all the work you put into maintaining your greenhouse and the plants inside will be for nothing.

It is important that the window frames do not contain any gaps between them. Warm or cold air can be let into the greenhouse if there are gaps. Cold or freezing air reaching your plants or crops could result in their death. Take extra time to fit your windows properly for this reason. This may end up in defeating the purpose of your greenhouse which you don’t want!

How To Select Greenhouse Windows

If you purchased a greenhouse kit then your windows should be included. This should also include the structures to support your greenhouse and all important building material with which you will build your greenhouse.

A large greenhouse that will contain a large number of plants, and one that can perhaps resist bad weather conditions, will probably require that you buy your windows from a greenhouse manufacturer. To get a model that is most suited to your needs, you may want to personally go the the manufacturer’s location to check out their stock, speak to their employee and have them guide you in the right direction, and look carefully over their selection.

For the ultimate do it yourselfer, or someone who wants to save a bit more, you can also choose to go out and find your windows. This allows for greater customization and freedom to adhere to your own design. You can purchase new from a supplier, or strike out on your own and look for recycled windows from salvage yards.

Whichever method you choose, proper fit is key. Do not assume that just because it is a kit or prefabricated model that the fit will automatically be perfect. Do your due diligence and inspect each and every window and frame to make sure that it is up to your standards.
