Getting Started With DIY Lawn Care

by Stephen Freelander

I know you are not thinking about it right now, but soon enough the lawn is going to emerge from under the snow and the weeds are gonna pop. Do you think you can handle it?

I have to figure that most of you are going to wait until the last minute to figure out what you are going to do with the grass this season. But you need to be ready to get out and put down the lawn treatments to make the lawn grow properly and keep out the nasty weeds. These tips should help you start your plan of action for this year.

The first thing I want you to think of when it comes to lawn care and treatments is the fertilizer you will be spreading. We need something that will give the lawn some green color as well as strengthen the root system. With that in mind, you want some nitrogen in the mix, but not too much. Be sure to get something with some other elements like potassium included.

I also recommend you get an organic based fertilizer for the summer months. These types of fertilizer release into the soil very slowly, thus preventing browning from over application. They also provide a great source of long term, slow release elements that are healthy for the turf.

After we have chosen out fertilizer, we need to figure out how we are going to eliminate the impending weed infestation. Now, I really don’t want you guys to use over the counter weed and feed products like you can get at the home improvement stores. These are completely bad for the environment because spreading them just slings the weed killing chemicals everywhere. We need something with more control.

It is always best to buy a hand can or pump spray bottle and mix the weed killer with water and spot spray the weeds.

To put the final touch on this thing, we need to get in some micro nutrients like iron and maybe some lime. In addition to that, I think you should lay down an insect treatment as well, just in case the grub worms attack. If you really get into it, lay down a quick application of fungus control in the later spring too why don’t you!

So if you are reading this at the last minute, and you are about to go nuts because the weeds are invading your brown lawn, get out this weekend and get started. You’ll be surprised how fast your lawn will respond.
